Online Multiplayer Games How It All Began

Just a few years ago, multiplayer gaming was just a “+1” for each game that supported such a gameplay mode; other than that, almost nobody cared about whether or not the title he wanted to buy supported a multiplayer mode.

Well, a few years have passed since then. As years pass, things tend to change; as things change, trends of the past become, as the word suggests: something that belongs to the past. Nowadays, it’s almost inconceivable that a new title doesn’t support some kind of multiplayer mode. Developers will throw in multiplayer elements in each and every way possible; after all, multiplayer gaming is the hottest gaming trend for the moment, why shouldn’t they? Let’s have a look at how this all began.

Although there where quite a few other multiplayer games available at the time, the real heat began when id software released the blockbuster title DOOM during the third quarter of 1993. Doom was a revolutionary first person shooter that shook the whole gaming world. Never before had the gaming society witnessed such a lifelike gaming environment and such an advanced multiplayer gameplay. DOOM was a real revolution; but this, was just the beginning! In the following years, id software released numerous sequels of the title; needless to say, all sequels had a great success.

As years passed, multiplayer gaming began to gain more and more popularity. In 1996, the same guys that did DOOM released a new smash title, Quake. Just a year after that, Quake II shook the whole gaming world for a second time; the time for hardware accelerated graphics processing had reached and Quake II was the only FPS multiplayer game to take advantage of this technology at the moment. Millions of gamers started to play Quake II online and countless multiplayer MODs (modifications of the original game rules) where released.

Finally, one of the last milestones in online gaming is Valve’s Half-Life. This is probably the most popular and successful game of the last decade; in fact, millions of fans are playing it’s extremely popular MODs (Counter-Strike, Call of Duty etc.) at any given moment, even now!

Following those great games, nowadays there are numerous blockbuster titles that boast an extreme multiplayer experience. New multiplayer titles are released every day but the most dominant ones for the moment are games such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life2, Lineage, Warcraft3, WoW, DOOM3, QuakeIV etc.

Computer Games Genres Something For Everyone

Just like songs, movies and basically any other form of entertainment that you might imagine, video games are divided into different categories, commonly referred to as genres. Not surprisingly, the bounds and criteria that apply for each genre are not strictly defined; thus, it is not uncommon that genre types might overlap or that a game belongs to more than one genre. Considering all the above, it is still possible to define some standard genres; below you will find some of the most popular ones along with their main characteristics.

Fighting games: Have you ever had the chance to play Street-Fighter? Well, if so, then this is the perfect sample to be used when describing what fighting games are all about. In fighting games you usually have to destroy your opponent (either human or computer) using martial arts, superpower movements or even handheld guns(less commonly). Some of the most popular fighting games are Street-Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibour and Tekken.

First Person Shooters (FPS): This is one of the most popular game genres. In FPS games you are usually impersonating a game character and you are navigating through a virtual world from the point of view of the character. This means that usually your screen is located to the position where your characters head is supposed to be; usually, you can only see the hands of your character. FPS games have a great emphasis on guns and action; whether it is a futuristic plasma blaster, a knife, a grenade or a common AK-47, chances are that if you play an FPS game you will also be holding something that kills. Apart from that, FPS games also show a great emphasis on online multiplayer modes; there is almost no FPS game nowadays that doesn’t support some type of multiplayer mode. Some popular FPS games are Half-Life/Counterstrike, Quake4, DOOM3, Painkiller etc.

Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG): Those are games aimed at creating a virtual environment where thousands of players are able to play and interact with each other in real time, inside the virtual world. Popular games of this genre are: World Of Warcraft, Lineage, Neverwinter nights etc. Simulations: Those are games where you are usually handling a vehicle; whether it is a car, an aircraft or a space rocket, you are usually assigned with special tasks that you need to accomplish in order to advance to the next levels. Popular simulation games are Falcon 4.0, Ace combat, MS Train Simulator, Trainz etc.

Finally, Strategy games are games where (as the name suggests) you have to use your strategic abilities in order to defeat your enemy. In most strategy games, you can create new buildings build new troops and research new technologies. Although there are games that fall into this category that do not really require much brains, some titles require some really sophisticated movements in order to win. Popular strategy games are StarCraft: Brood War, Warcraft3 and Age of Empires.

Pinball Games

Since the first pinball game was introduced by Gottlieb in 1947, pinball, though it has had its ups and downs, has survived and grown in the U.S. It is such a simple game, actually. All you have to do is make sure a little silver metal ball stays in play on a slightly tilted planar surface. The player manipulates the ball so that it hits targets and flies through ramps, picking up speed at points along the way with the help of two flippers or levers. All the player needs to do (easier said than done) is to make sure the ball does not fall out at the bottom. Over nearly 60 years, a lot of the pinball machine's looks have changed: flashing lights, great graphics, sound, and music that is upbeat. But the game essentially has remained the same.

After the first game, Humpty Dumpty, many pinball games made their appearance. The first game to use a moving target was Williams' Magic Clock. The first one with a microprocessor was Spirit of 76 in the 1970s. Williams' Black Knight in 1980 was the first one with a two-level playing field. The first one with a song or soundtrack was High Speed in 1986.

Today, there are a host of games to choose from, each one snazzier than the one before. Let's take a look at Loony Labyrinth, where there are two levels of play, the present and the past. It starts in the present and takes you through time, back to 2000 BC. There are various levels of play, and each one tempts the player with its music and design.

Another interesting game is Austin Powers. The layout is a standard pinball machine with laser canon and flippers. Completion of one level leads you on to the next, and each level has its own set of stunning graphics and audio.

Pinball games are great de-stressers. But they could become an addiction, so watch out!

Simulation Games

Simulation games create a whole new world to explore, one that is virtually realistic. They represent a virtual environment, with virtual characters having interesting and life-like interactions between the various components of a virtual world. The graphics and sounds are often amazingly close to reality. Everything seems real, from the weather conditions over the Pacific in air combat games to the geography of lands in strategy games.

They are a new, higher pedestal of gaming, often combining elements of skill, chance and strategy, (like for a civilization building game), wherein real as well as fictional worlds may be simulated and often you see the world through the eyes of a fictitious character.

There is a whole colorful range of simulation games to pick from. Some games allow you to act as a creator and manage a world, like the Sim City series that include virtual city planning and building with varied levels of infrastructure. Another is the Tycoon games, which give you the opportunity to own, build, manage and upgrade your own theme park, restaurant, or even a zoo. Perhaps the most popular simulation games are the driving and racing games, such as Motoracer, Need for Speed, and Monster Madness. Also, providing an adrenalin rush are the Air Combat Flight Games, where you can pick your mission, and be equipped with a supply of ammunition to carry it out. Other fighters may also be simulated to give the game a further realistic touch. In a few of the flight simulator games, you could look into are Microsoft Combat Flight Sim 3, Lock on: Modern Air Combat, Flight Deck 2, Falcon 4.0, and Strike Fighters, Project 1.

Life games are like living in a game, only in the skin of your fictitious character that interacts with the different components of the virtual world. Adventure games like Tomb Raider, Role Play and Dating Games to name a few, are popular, and reside at top of the gaming entertainment charts.

Simulation games offer a virtual environment that allows players to discover, create, destroy, improvise, upgrade, and imagine.

Free Online RPG Games

Role-playing games, or RPGs, are quite popular among those who play computer games. This is because such games allow you to take on different characters and use the capabilities that these characters have as you play the game.

Some of these characters include being warlocks and wizards who have magical powers, military generals that command a large number of forces, and even wealthy tycoons who can purchase anything they want. There is a thrill in taking on these characters and using their powers to achieve a mission or solve a mystery.

The plots of these role-playing games are also as varied as the characters that players play. In these games, military generals are tasked to create empires; tycoons are encouraged to make more money; and wizards are tasked to do accomplish a mission or go on quests. The plots of these games, which started out as the classic battle between good and evil, have now evolved into games that also deal with the gray areas of life and other situations outside the conventional.

Apart from being available in computer games stores, these RPGs have also become available on the Internet. There is also a large number of websites that offer these games for free, and most of these can be played while the user is online. RPGs have also been a good avenue for different players to play with each other using a network. This has enabled players from different countries to play the same game with each other and has added to the popularity of this type of game on the Internet.

Role-playing games have become a popular download among fans of games that let the player take on different roles, be in different time periods, and interact with various people across the globe. The popularity of such games is increasing, as evidenced by the number of players who actually download and play the games. As technology continues to improve, innovations in these types of games can only further fuel its popularity.

Real Arcade Games

Real arcade games are very popular in the public places where people are likely to be waiting for something. They are a great way to kill time, and can be found in video arcades, restaurants, bowling alleys, college campuses, laundromats, movie theaters, supermarkets, shopping malls, airports and bars. Many people also choose to place real arcade games in their homes, so that they can entertain themselves as well as their guests at any time, in the comfort of the home.

Real coin-operated arcade games can be gumball vending machines, crane machines, jukeboxes, slot machines, touch screen machines and redemption ticket games. Pinball machines are also very popular in arcades, and have been for decades. Whether you are interested in a racing game, an electronic dart board, or whatever, you can find whatever you need in the market.

Owning these coin-operated arcade games provides people the opportunity to have their own full time business, and helps small business owners add to their income. These game machines also benefit the owners of restaurants, laundromats, or any business with walk-in clients. They lend a great helping hand in attracting customers, and in keeping customers onsite for longer periods of time.

There are places on the Internet which offer used and new real arcade game machines, like moneymachines.com. Vintagearcade.net offers a large selection of used classic and rare arcade game machines. You can also do a Google search of "Real Arcade Games" to find out what sites exist that might sell new and used video game consoles.

Free Online Bingo

Playing a bingo game does not necessarily mean that you have to be present in a bingo hall. Like the different board games (backgammon, for example), bingo can be played online too. A player will only need to register on one the websites offering this game and open an account. The fun and excitement of paying against other people is preserved as the online player is also playing against a network of other players online. Some of these players are from the other parts of the globe. So it is like an international tournament of bingo players.

Playing bingo is really exciting. Veteran players accumulate points that entitle them to many perks. Other bingo gaming sites offer their players free bingo games as part of their prize. A free bingo game will also entitle the winner to a real cash prize. This is one of the ways bingo sites keep their clients loyal, interested, and rewarded. Free bingo games, of course, add more fun into the whole business of it. Imagine playing for free but still being eligible to win the jackpot.

While most bingo games sites may require you to pay game or membership fees through your credit card, some bingo sites offer free online bingo gaming. Experience this kind of exhilarating game online without having to pay for anything. And if you're not the gambling type, this is great news as you may still enjoy playing the game by joining a network of bingo players and hit virtual jackpots. There may not be real prizes, but the thrill and excitement are still there to be experienced.

Free online bingo games are the sort of games you may play while on your coffee break in the office. This way, you enjoy your favorite game without breaking company rules against gambling on the office premises.
